Pelvic Pain Q & A

What is pelvic pain?

Pelvic pain is common, with many women experiencing this problem. The pain may vary by nature and intensity. In some instances, the pain is sharp and fleeting. In other cases, the pain is constant, lasting for months and months.

Pelvic pain may feel localized or diffuse. It may begin in the genitals or in and around the pelvis.

What is chronic pelvic pain?

As the name suggests, chronic pelvic pain is long-lasting pain that persists for six months or longer. Chronic pelvic pain may be continuous or come and go. Sometimes the pain follows a regular cycle, such as occurring during your period, while urinating, or during sex.

What causes pelvic pain?

Acute and chronic pelvic pain is brought on by a variety of sources. Acute pelvic pain may be a sign of:

  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Ruptured or twisted cyst
  • Miscarriage
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Ruptured fallopian tube

Chronic pelvic pain may be triggered by:

  • Endometriosis
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Fibroids
  • Scar tissue
  • Endometrial polyps

Cancer of the reproductive tract can also cause pelvic pain.

How is pelvic pain diagnosed?

Dr. Braswell can determine the source of your pelvic pain. She reviews your medical history and performs a physical exam, including a pelvic exam.

Depending on what she finds, she may recommend one or more imaging tests to rule out possible causes of pelvic pain. Once she pinpoints the source, she works with you to develop a treatment plan to address the underlying cause of the pain.

How is pelvic pain treated?

Depending on your diagnosis, Dr. Braswell recommends targeted remedies. These may include:

  • Pain-relieving medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Nutritional therapy

Lifestyle changes may help to minimize pelvic pain. For pain related to menstruation, acupuncture, acupressure, taking supplements containing magnesium and vitamin B1 may help ease menstrual cramps.

If these conservative measures don't provide you with relief, Dr. Braswell may discuss surgical options. She may recommend laparoscopy, a minimally invasive outpatient procedure to address the source of your pelvic pain.

There's no need to suffer from pelvic pain when Dr. Braswell provides effective care for your condition. Call the office of Precious L. Braswell, MD, OB/GYN, LLC, or book a consultation online for your diagnosis and treatment
