Pregnancy Q & A

When should I see my doctor about my pregnancy?

Ideally, call the office of Precious L. Braswell, MD, OB/GYN, LLC, as soon as you see the happy results of a positive pregnancy test. Dr. Braswell may suggest taking a urine or blood test at the office to confirm your exciting news.

Dr. Braswell then asks you a series of questions designed to promote a healthy pregnancy. She asks you the date of your last period in order to calculate your due date.

Dr. Braswell also reviews your medical history, including past pregnancies and deliveries. She performs a physical exam and recommends a series of lab tests. She writes you a prescription for prenatal vitamins, which contain folic acid and essential minerals and vitamins.

At the end of your visit, Dr. Braswell walks you through the schedule of prenatal visits to monitor your health and your pregnancy.

When do I come in for pregnancy checkups?

Dr. Braswell tailors your schedule of visits to your particular circumstances, depending on whether she deems your pregnancy low risk or high risk.

A high-risk pregnancy is one where you need extra monitoring due to factors such as your age, weight, or a chronic health condition, like diabetes. If you're having more than one baby or you've gone into premature labor, Dr. Braswell also may consider you high risk.

With a low-risk pregnancy, you visit the office of Precious L. Braswell, MD, OB/GYN, LLC, every four weeks in your first six months of pregnancy, then come in every two weeks in your seventh and eight months. In your ninth month, you see Dr. Braswell every week until your baby arrives.

With a high-risk pregnancy, however, you may visit Dr. Braswell more often. She'll discuss how often she'd like to see you.

How will I feel during my pregnancy?

More than 60% of pregnant women feel nauseous in the morning and at night, so you too may experience this common symptom. You may also experience one or more of these typical symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Indigestion
  • Heartburn
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Constipation

If you're worried about your pregnancy symptoms, contact Dr. Braswell. Some pregnancy symptoms may be a sign of an underlying issue.

For example, a painful headache during your second or third trimester could be a symptom of high blood pressure or a pregnancy complication known as preeclampsia.
